Lessons

With a combined 50 years of teaching experience and a continued career in the performing arts, the Dearings are highly sought after as music instructors in the Michigan area. Their studio is located in Farmington Hills, Michigan on the border of Novi and Livonia. Private music lessons may be arranged with Abha (voice/flute) or Steven (guitar) based on an initial meeting/evaluation.

Steven Dearing has been teaching guitar since 1992 in the Southeast Michigan and Southern Ontario region. He has produced many fine graduates from his studio, including dozens of scholarship recipients, competition winners, and most notably, many of his former students now teach and perform themselves making a living doing music. Steven holds a Masters degree in Guitar Performance and his Bachelors degree is music education. He served as Professor of Guitar Studies at the University of Windsor from 1995-2018. He also taught at Macomb Community College for seven years. He has produced 4 acclaimed recordings, and is both soloist and chamber musician.

Steven’s teaching style is based on classical teaching, meaning that his students will learn not only learn to be technically adept, but will learn fundamental music theory, allowing them to be creative and learn to be expressive musicians.  More information is also available at Steven’s solo site StevenDearing.com

Abha Dearing has been teaching flute and voice privately since her teenage years. Her training includes studies in both Eastern and Western music; from the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California and private voice lessons with Laxmi Shankar, to private flute lessons with Detroit Symphony members Clem Barone, Jeff Zook, and Ervin Monroe earning her a Bachelor of Music Education, Wayne State University, to studies in classical voice with Janice Albright earning her a Masters degree in Voice Performance at Oakland University.

Abha has been teaching in the Michigan school system for 20 years and currently is the Vocal Arts director at Mercy High School. She is the co director of music at Birmingham Unitarian Church.  Many of Abha’s student have won various scholarships and awards including First Division ratings at Michigan’s District and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals, the Verdi Opera Competition, and numerous other prizes and awards.
