The interview traces Steven’s path from a self-taught electric guitarist at age 16 — through two years of chemistry studies, a pivot to formal music education, and Master of Music work on full scholarship at Wayne State University — to the founding of the Dearing Concert Duo with soprano and flutist Abha Dearing. Asked what he finds most rewarding, Steven pointed to three constants in the Dearings’ work: seeing students progress, performing together as a married duo, and “doing music and music only for a living.” That ethos — classical music as daily discipline and shared vocation — has shaped the Duo’s 25+ years of concert work, 500+ wedding ceremonies, six Detroit Music Awards, and their European concert debut at the Cheltenham International Music Festival.
