About the Duo

 
Steven and Abha formed the dearing concert duo in 1998 after becoming partners in marriage and in the short time since have performed in venues across the US, Canada, and Europe. They are based in metro Detroit Michigan and they frequently perform at many of the areas finest venues. The duo performs virtuosic repertoire for both voice and classical guitar, as well as flute and classical guitar. Voice and guitar highlights include works by Spaniards such as Manuel de Falla, Joaquin Rodrigo and Brazilian composer Heitor Villa Lobos. Flute and guitar highlights include the Argenteans Astor Piazzolla and Maximo Diego Pujol.

The duo produced three critically acclaimed CD's;the first two featuring music for flute and guitar, and the third featuring music for voice and guitar plus some solo guitar works. All three can be heard on radio stations across North America and the UK.

The duo has performed on both American public television and CBC television as well as American and Canadian radio. Both Abha and Steven hold Masters of Music degrees and reside on faculty at metro Detroit area music schools. They are the recipients of six Detroit Music Awards.

Vocalist and flautist Abha Dearing grew up in Michigan where she began performing at the age of five with her father. She earned a Bachelors degree at Wayne State University studying flute with Ervin Monroe (DSO) and Clem Barone (DSO ret.), and is currently pursuing her Masters degree studying voice with Janice Albright at Oakland University. Abha has won a number of awards including "Outstanding Classical Vocalist" given twice by the Motor City Music Foundation. She has performed throughout Michiagan as well as in many countries around the world. Abha is on the music faculty at Mercy High School and Birmingham Unitarian Church. She is well versed in classical music as a soprano, but can also be heard singing jazz and Indian classical music on a frequent basis.

Guitarist Steven Dearing grew up in Ontario and received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Windsor and his Master's from Wayne State University. He has studied under several guitarists including Jeffrey McFadden, Dominic Bertucci and John Holmquist, and has performed in master classes with David Russel, Manuel Barreuco, and Fabio Zanon. Steven has been nominated Outstanding Classical Instrumentalist by the Detroit Music Awards, performed with orchestra, won a number of competitions and scholarships in both Ontario and Michigan, and was featured on both CBC-radio and television as well as Public Television. He is currently the Guitar Instructor at the University of Windsor and performs throughout the metro Detroit area on a weekly basis.

Highlights


On April 19, 2002, the Dearing's were presented with THREE awards by the Motor City Music Foundation: Outstanding Classical Vocalist for the second year in a row, Outstanding Classical Album for Snapshots of South America and the Duo won Outstanding Small Ensemble. They were honored to perform for Canada's former Prime Minister Jean Cretien and many delegates at the 2000 Organization of American States Summit.

The duo has performed throughout the US and Canada at numerous concert halls, churches, museums, art galleries and libraries. In the summer of 2002, the duo made its first appearances in Europe including the Chelteham International Music Festival.
